Abstract

In general, it is true that there are no big love stories in Neo-Latin epic poetry that imitate the classical model of Aeneas and Dido, respectively their failure of their love. Ubertino Carrara SJ, one of the most giftet epic poets of early eighteenth century Rome, nevertheless did not want to miss a big love story in his large scale epic poem Columbus (Rome 1715) where he describes Columbus' first voyage to the New World in twelve books. In this paper, I will discuss the love between Columbus and Auria, a princess from Cuba, and between Columbus' son Fernandus and Vasilinda, a cannibal warrior maid. Both stories play an important role for the overall structure of the poem, and both must fail in order to achieve the poem's main goal.

Florian Schaffenrath is interested especially in Neo-Latin epic poetry: As his PhD thesis, he published the poem Columbus of father Ubertino Carrara SJ (Rome 1715), an epic poem in 12 books about the first voyage of Christopher Columbus to the New World. Shorter articles deal inter alia with Petrarch’s Africa and Sannazaro’s De partu Virginis. As a member of the research group “Geschichte der lateinischen Literatur in Tirol” (published in 2012), Schaffenrath is also interested in writing regional history of Neo-Latin literature. He has edited several texts and published numerous articles on the subject of the Tirol. Schaffenrath is member of the “International Association of Neo-Latin Studies” (IANLS) and of the “Die Neulateinische Gesellschaft” (DNG). In the LBI for Neo-Latin Studies he was key researcher in the politics line, before he went to Freiburg University with a Alexander-von-Humboldt fellowship. In August 2014 he finished his Habilitation about Cicero's Philippics, in September 2014 Schaffenrath succeeded Stefan Tilg as director of the LBI for Neolatin Studies.
